I am the money manager in our house, and for the past few years I’ve been using Mint to help keep us on track and honest with our spending.
Before my now-husband and I decided to combine our finances, I had been using Mint to help me budget for graduate school. By setting this goal, I was able to gain control of my finances and budget my money accordingly. As a result, I could afford to go to school part-time and graduated debt free!
Once my husband and I joined our accounts, I was able to easily track our savings and spending together, and even set up our first goal as a couple: to save for our wedding. By using Mint’s different features, we saw where we needed to cut back, tracked our progression, and were able to save over $30,000 in just two years!
The secret to our success was quite simple. Every month, we projected how much we would need to cover our expenses using Mint. When our paychecks arrived, the amount beyond our budget went immediately into a separate savings account – the same day. We knew leaving any “extra” in our account meant we would be tempted to spend it.
After only a few months of marriage and accomplishing our first goal, we immediately decided to set our second goal: a down payment on a house. With Mint reminding us to keep our spending in check, we saved enough for a small down payment and were even able to cover all of our closing costs. Putting our money in savings the same day as payday was once tough, but by then – it had become habit. We often said: “just pretend like it doesn’t exist!”
We did this while living in a quite pricey area with average paying jobs – so it can be done. The fact that we were able to do this blew me away…it still does!
So why do I love Mint? As someone who is very budget-conscious – but isn’t the best at staying on track long term – Mint has been a godsend. It allows us to keep financial control of our lives, constantly helps us stay on track, and has been the easiest financial app to understand (much easier than reinventing the wheel on my own!) Mint is helping us achieve things I didn’t think were possible – and we closed on our house last month. Thank you, Mint!
