Valentine’s Day 2011: How Much You Spent

Every Valentine’s Day, couples “surprise” each other with flowers, candy and maybe even — depending on the state of the relationship — with jewelry or lingerie. Those purchases, of course, are generally made at least a few days in advance (though, we suspect, a fair number of procrastinators will flock to certain stores and flower shops during their lunch break or after work today). So how much do people spend on Valentine’s Day gifts? To find out, we looked at transaction data in the aggregate, in this case average price per transaction at a few select retailers. We were also curious to find out in which cities people spent the most. The results are in this infographic. Way to go, Phoenix, Ariz., you have hereby been crowned Most Romantic City of 2011!
